Introduction
Het was in de middeleeuwen traditie om de levens van heiligen op papier te zetten. Enerzijds wilde de schrijver met zijn verhaal bereiken dat het wonderbaarlijke leven van de heilige voor het nageslacht bewaard zou blijven en zou dienen als herinnering en lichtend voorbeeld en anderzijds wilde de schrijver zijn tijdgenoten een spiegel voorhouden. De Vaders hielden ervan, de lofwaardige adel van de heiligen en de roemrijke afloop van hun krijgsdienst te beschrijven. Aldus wilden zij enerzijds latere generaties ertoe brengen, God te loven die zo wonderbaar met broze materie omgaat en anderzijds hun een voorbeeld geven om na te volgen. Al zijn we ver verwijderd van hun manier van leven en inzicht, toch wagen wij het niet, ongehoorzaam zijn.
